This year, on the 100th anniversary of the death of the composer and pedagogue, La Garriga is paying tribute to the artist with a series of activities.
The Martí l’Humà University Foundation and the La Garriga City Council have prepared a program of activities to commemorate the centenary of the death of Narcisa Freixas.
A prominent figure for her work as a composer and musical pedagogue, especially recognized for the children’s songs and repertoire that she promoted and disseminated, Freixas is linked to La Garriga for having spent a large part of her life there.
Under the title “Voice and living memory: 100 years of inclusive musical pedagogy”, the activities begin this March: on the 17th, with the conference by Ester Vela “Narcisa Freixas: composer and pedagogue”, at the Teatre de la Garriga, El Patronat.
On the 21st, the Narcisa Freixas Day will be held at Can Luna, which will include concerts and an escape room. The Municipal School of Music and the workshops of Petit EMAD will play a prominent role in the day, as the children of the EMM will perform a cantata that will be accompanied by the projection of a stop motion audiovisual created by the children of Petit l’EMAD, inspired by the artist’s illustrations.
The commemorative events will last throughout the year, with sardana dances, concerts and an interactive exhibition about the artist, which will be hosted by the Andreu Dameson i Aspa hall in November.
Presentation of the events
In presenting the program of events, the councilor for Heritage, Albert Jiménez, explained that "Narcisa Freixas found in La Garriga the ideal place to compose and perform her work. In addition, she was a woman who stood out in a world of men and the start of the centenary events coincides with the commemoration of Women's Day".
Xavier Gotanegra, councilor for Culture, noted that the concerts will play a prominent role in the centenary events, especially those of the Municipal School of Music, whose choirs will be called Narcisa Freixas. An Escape Room about the author has also been scheduled.
On behalf of the FUMH, its director, Mònica Sabata, celebrated the joint work between the City Council and her entity in order to be able to offer "a diverse and transversal program, which will allow everyone to talk about what Narcisa Freixas represented".
